Breast cancer: Health guide

This research guide has been prepared by the staff of the Consumer Health Information Service (CHIS), which is located on the third floor of the Toronto Reference Library in downtown Toronto. CHIS is funded in part by the Government of Ontario.

Definition

Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is caused by the development of malignant cells in the breast, often originating in the lining of the milk glands or ducts. Cancer cells are divide uncontrollably, leading to abnormal growth and the ability to invade normal tissue locally or to spread throughout the body. [Adapted from “Breast cancer”, v. 1, p. 164].
